Safety, Hospitality, and Cooperation in Connection with the Total Solar Eclipse on 12th of August 2026

On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will be visible from Iceland, and across many parts of the country large numbers of visitors are expected to gather to experience this unique natural phenomenon. For residents living within the eclipse zone, this presents both a challenge and a special opportunity. In many ways, residents are the hosts of this event, and many visitors will remember the welcome they received.

It is a privilege to experience a total solar eclipse from your own home or local area. With good preparation, consideration, and cooperation, we can all contribute to a safe and positive experience for both residents and visitors.

Expect Increased Activity and Traffic

In many areas, significantly more traffic than usual can be expected, including both vehicle traffic and pedestrians. It is important to:

  • Allow for longer travel times and possible delays.
  • Drive with extra caution, especially as many visitors may be unfamiliar with Icelandic conditions.
  • Avoid parking on road shoulders or in ways that block emergency routes, driveways, or traffic flow. Park only in designated parking areas.

Prioritize Your Own Safety

While many people will want to experience the eclipse outdoors, it is important to choose a safe location:

  • Stay away from hazardous areas such as cliff edges, shorelines with strong waves, rivers, glaciers, or areas where darkness may create danger
  • Pay special attention to children and elderly people
  • Dress appropriately for the weather and prepare for cold conditions even in summer, as temperatures drop during a total eclipse

Protect Your Eyes

Looking directly at the sun without approved eclipse glasses or proper equipment is dangerous.

  • Use only certified eclipse glasses.
  • Regular sunglasses are not sufficient.
  • Supervise children carefully and ensure they use appropriate eye protection.

Show Patience and Hospitality

Many visitors will be in unfamiliar surroundings and may seek information or assistance.

  • Show consideration and helpfulness whenever possible.
  • If you observe dangerous behavior or people in difficulty, respond calmly and call for assistance if necessary.
  • Kindly remind visitors to respect nature and stay on marked paths.

Be Prepared for Changing Conditions

Weather in Iceland can change rapidly, and conditions may become challenging with little warning.

  • Monitor weather forecasts and information from authorities.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel if traffic congestion or weather conditions create hazards.
  • Follow updates from municipalities, the Police, Civil Protection, and other official authorities.
