Úlfarsfell is one of the most popular outdoor recreation areas in the Greater Reykjavík area, with numerous marked hiking trails criss-crossing the mountain. This circular route starts by the woodland area at Hamrahlíð, on the western slopes of Úlfarsfell, where there is ample parking.
The route begins through the woodland at Hamrahlíð, which is managed by the Mosfellsbær Forestry Association. Reforestation in the area began in the first half of the 20th century, and the woodland is home to species including birch, Sitka spruce and Norway spruce.
From the woodland, follow the marked trails up the slopes of Úlfarsfell towards the mountain’s highest summit, easily recognised by the telecommunications masts at the top. The summit offers sweeping views across the Capital Region and the surrounding landscape.
On the descent, well-maintained trails and steps make the steepest sections easier to navigate. The route then continues beneath the slopes of Úlfarsfell, alongside a geothermal pipeline, before returning to the woodland at Hamrahlíð.
