The steepest ascent of Úlfarsfell, from Skarhólabraut, and ideal for practising both hill climbing on the way up and trail running on the way down. The run starts at Skarhólamýri and climbs straight up the slope to the summit of Úlfarsfell. The path is well marked and the scouts in Mosfellsbær have installed around 250 steps on the hillside, making the route easier and safer. The route is short, about 3.5 km, but steep with around 200 metres of climb over a short distance, so parts are often hiked on the way up. At the top there are magnificent views in all directions over the greater Reykjavík area, Mt. Esja and Mosfellsdalur. The descent is perfect for practising downhill trail-running technique. The surface is mixed: soil, gravel and rock and the steps can be slippery when wet. The route is a loop and suits those wanting a short but demanding workout. Parking is available at the start.
