This route is the course of the Stjörnuhlaup, an annual trail run held by the Stjarnan running group since 2011. The route runs on the Garðabær side of Heiðmörk, in the Vífilsstaðir area, and is among the most popular training routes for local runners. The loop starts at the Miðgarður sports hall, which stands by the golf course in Vetrarmýri. From Miðgarður you follow a track east below Hnoðraholt and along the golf course into the Garðabær Forestry woodlands in Smalaholt and on through Sandahlíð. The route climbs for the first 5 km, reaching its highest point at around 150 metres on the slope above the Scout hut. From there it is almost all downhill, with an enjoyable long descent to Vífilsstaðavatn and home to Miðgarður. Total ascent is around 200 metres. The surface is not very rough, mostly compacted soil paths as in most of Heiðmörk, a soft horse path in part and new gravel paths. Be careful at one time when you have to cross a road. Other parts of the route are safe and accessible for all abilities and suits training runs. On summer days there is some traffic on the paths, both walkers and cyclists. There are good facilities at Miðgarður before and after a run, with toilets and shelter.
