A varied running route around Öskjuhlíð, one of Reykjavík’s most popular recreational areas within walking distance of the city centre. Öskjuhlíð itself is an interesting area with varied natural features, notable geological formations, one of the densest forests in Reykjavík and unique wartime remains. The run follows a network of paths through the hill, with many small ascents and descents that make the route varied and good for training. At the top stands Perlan, a city landmark, with wide views over the greater Reykjavík area. The route also leads down to Nauthólsvík, where there is a geothermal beach and bathing facilities. The surface is mixed — gravel paths, forest trails and asphalt in places — and the route is about a 6 km loop with moderate but continuous elevation gain. It suits both training and easy running and is popular year-round. Toilets are available at Perlan and at Nauthólsvík.
