Hraunsnefsöxl Hiking trail
Hraunsnefsöxl is one of Borgarfjörður’s hidden gems. This scenic 6 km hike is surprisingly accessible despite its dramatic appearance, with around 300 metres of elevation gain. The route leads through beautiful landscapes to the ridge, offering spectacular views of Norðurárdalur, Baula, Langjökull, Þórisjökull, Eiríksjökull and the surrounding countryside.

Hraunsnefsöxl has a rugged and perhaps intimidating appearance, but the hiking trail is a pleasant surprise. It is varied, scenic, and not particularly challenging for experienced hikers. Reaching the top of these dramatic and imposing mountain ridges is a rewarding experience, especially after having seen them from afar countless times while travelling through Borgarfjörður and northward.
Starting from Hraunsnef, the trail is approximately 6 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of just under 490 metres. The entire route is marked with trail posts, helping hikers stay on track and enhancing safety along the way.
Once at the top, hikers can enjoy a scenic loop, take a break with their packed lunch, and soak in the spectacular views. The panorama stretches across Norðurárdalur and Borgarfjörður, with views towards Baula, Langjökull, Þórisjökull, Eiríksjökull, and the surrounding countryside.
