Travel across the deserted countryside. A delightful walk on Langanes peninsula, visiting the district’s abandoned farmsteads in their distinctive surroundings. The walk starts at the town campsite and finishes at the farm stay in Ytra Lón. Most of the route is good walking terrain, but in places it crosses marshy and uneven ground. Note that if you follow this route, the finish is a considerable distance from the start. However, it is possible to continue along the country road and follow that route back to Þórshöfn. This provides an opportunity to explore the foreshore, with its driftwood and other found treasures. The route also passes Sauðanes, a historically famous church site situated 7 km north of Þórshöfn. The parsonage at Sauðanes is the oldest stone house in this part of the country, constructed in 1879. It is an exceptionally rare building and unique nationally. There visitors can learn about life on Langanes during the period when Sauðanes was inhabited, and how the parsonage functioned as the social centre of the area.
