Looking for a challenging yet rewarding hike with unforgettable views? Just 10 km from downtown Akureyri, Súlur awaits! The hike takes you up two rhyolite peaks – Ytri-Súla (closer to town) and the higher Syðri-Súla (1,213 m). From the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramas of Eyjafjörður and Akureyri when the skies are clear. Access is by road: drive up Súluvegur and park at the car park at the end of the road. From this car park you’ll also find the start points for several other routes, so take care to follow the signs before setting off. The route up Súlur begins at the stream just south of the car park. Shortly after the stream, follow the steps up a small rise, then cross a fence via a stile. From there the path follows sheep tracks and footpaths all the way to the summit; the route is waymarked. Note that the trail crosses boggy ground and can be wet in places, although the Akureyri Hiking Club (Ferðafélag Akureyrar) has installed plank bridges over the worst sections. The path is steep in parts, so we recommend sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
Total distance approximately 11 km. Elevation gain: 900 m.
