Starting from Kleifar near Ólafsfjörður, this hike follows the coastal cliffs and sheep trails along the mountain slope. After a leisurely hour of walking, you'll reach the entrance of a small valley (Fossdalur), where an old lighthouse stands.
Fossdalur is a charming small valley encircled by towering cliffs on three sides, overlooked by the majestic Hvanndalsbjarg (755 m). A river flows through the valley, cascading over the cliff's edge into the sea. The valley gets its name from this waterfall. To cross the river, take the small foot bridge. Although the valley's cliff faces might suggest it's impassable, two trails lead to Hvanndalir. One is called the Short Way, taking you across the brink of Hvanndalsbjarg—challenging and very risky without caution. Alternatively, you can take the so-called Long Way, which ventures into the valley bottom. This route is also quite challenging and suitable only for experienced hikers.
The Long Way trail weaves into Fossdalur’s depths and climbs a steep slope to a pass above, guiding you into Hvanndalir. Here, you'll find Ódáinsakur—a mythical spot believed to have life-giving herbs that grant immortality to those who consume them. The distance between Kleifar and Ódáinsakur is about 11 kilometers. You can choose to retrace your steps or continue on another route to Héðinsfjörður for more adventure.
