This is a lovely hike that explores the eastern part of Fjörður, a deserted area between Eyjafjörður and Skjálfandi bay. This particular path takes you from Hvalvatnsfjörður. From there, you head west across the meadow, crossing a footbridge, and continue west over to Þönglabakki in Þorgeirsfjörður. Historically, this was one of the most isolated church sites in the country. The same trail can be taken back, and it’s a great idea to stop at the cape along the way and enjoy the view of the lake, located up there.

Getting to Hvalvatnsfjörður involves driving along a rugged road just over 30 km, which is only suitable for four-wheel drive vehicles—so plan accordingly! Prepare for an off-the-beaten-path experience as the road becomes more challenging once you leave the main road.

This hiking route makes for an enjoyable day trip suitable for most fitness levels. Many choose to extend their trip by exploring the Látraströnd area and the entire Fjörður region. Usually, the trip involves staying overnight once or up to three times along the way.

Total distance approximately 10 km (round trip).
