Strípshringur is a circular trail of just over 4 km in Heiðmörk, passing through well-vegetated forested areas and open spaces, leading up to a height that offers a great view of the surroundings. The road leading into Heiðmörk branches off from Suðurlandsvegur near Rauðhólar, continuing past Elliðavatn and Elliðavatnsbær and straight along Heiðmerkurvegur until reaching the so-called Borgarstjóraplan in the middle of Heiðmörk.
The hike begins from the parking area, following a path that starts at a red-painted shed in one corner. The path is marked with orange posts. After about 200 meters, the path splits in two, and the route continues to the right. Shortly after, the path forks again, where one should once more take the right-hand path, and again when the trail splits for a third time after approximately 600 meters.
The trail continues until reaching its highest point, offering panoramic views in all directions, particularly towards Esja and over Sundin. Further into the lava field, a small hill rises with a prominent rock formation on top—this is Strípir, after which the trail and the surrounding lava field are named.
The route then crosses a forest road known as Landnemaslóð, named after the settler groups that have planted trees here since around 1950. However, the hike does not follow Landnemaslóð but stays on the designated trail. The path soon curves back northeast toward Borgarstjóraplan, with hikers advised to always take the right-hand path when it splits.
Along the trail, the Reykjavík Forestry Association, which manages Heiðmörk, has placed beautiful informational signs offering insights into the area's vegetation and birdlife. More information can be found at heidmork.is.
