Hraunsvatn, located in the valley of Öxnadalur at approximately 500 meters above sea level, is fed by the Hraunsá River, which meanders about 300 meters before disappearing into the rocky landscape. This area is historically significant as it lies along the trail of poet Jónas Hallgrímsson (1807–1845), whose father tragically drowned in Hraunsvatn in 1816. Jónas was only nine years old at the time and was subsequently sent into foster care.

The hike starts from the farmstead of Hraun. A marked grazing trail, indicated by red poles, follows the valley floor. The scenery around the lake is truly captivating, with the towering Mt. Hraundrangur (1,075 m) overseeing the route.

Hikers are advised to park at the pasture ahead of the designated parking area near the farm Hraun and to walk across the farmyard to access the trailhead.
