14,400 departures of foreign passengers in May

Departures of foreign passengers from Iceland via Keflavík Airport were 14,400 in May, according to figures from Tourist Board and Isavia, or fourteen times more than in May 2020, when there were about one thousand departures.

Departures of foreign passengers have not exceeded ten thousand in one month since September 2020.

The picture to the right shows the figures for May for the last 5 years.

Since the beginning of the year, almost 32 thousand foreign passengers have departed from Iceland via Keflavík Airport, which is a 90.4% decrease compared to the same period last year, when the departure of foreign passengers was almost 336 thousand.

If we look at the division between nationalities in May, it can be seen that the vast majority of passengers were Americans, or about half of those who passed through the airport. This is followed by the departures of Poles (9.1% of the total) and Germans (6.5% of the total). A comparison is not available between years (2020-2021) as the sample measurements were not carried out by nationality in May 2020.
