Update August 5th at 01:00 PM:

  • The lcelandic Icelandic Meteorological Office has confirmed that the eruption is over.
  • Tourists are still asked to exercise caution in the area
    • It is life-threatening to walk on freshly solidified lava, as the surface crust can break without warning, revealing glowing lava directly beneath.
    • There is a danger at lava edges, where thin, fluid lava tongues can suddenly flow forward. The lava edge can also collapse forward.
    • Gas pollution may continue to exceed dangerous levels in the vicinity of the volcano.

Update July 30st at 08:00 AM:

  • The lava flow is ongoing but has decreased significantly since the eruption began on July 16th, with activity remaining in one crater.
  • Air traffic to and from Iceland is unaffected, and Iceland remains open and safe for tourists.
  • Travelers in the area with respiratory conditions are advised to take extra care, as gas pollution from the eruption may cause discomfort. Vulnerable individuals should limit outdoor exposure if symptoms occur.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Volcanic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula resumed shortly before 4 AM on July 16th, on the Sundhnúkur crater row
  • Air traffic to and from Iceland remains unaffected, and all services across the country continue to operate as usual.
  • The lava flow does not threaten infrastructure and Grindavik is safe.

We remind travelers in the area to follow air quality as there can be pollution from the eruption site. Here you can observe air quality.

This volcanic activity is highly localized and has no impact on infrastructure or attractions across the rest of Iceland. Iceland authorities and the public are highly prepared for such events, and Iceland has one of the world's most effective volcanic preparedness measures.
