Updated Guidelines and Checklists for Safety Plans
Under Act No. 96/2018 on the Icelandic Tourist Board, anyone operating organised tours within Icelandic territory is required to have a safety plan for each type of tour.
The Icelandic Tourist Board has recently reviewed and updated the guidelines and examples available to tourism operators for preparing safety plans. This includes revised checklists for different types of tours and activities.
The checklists are intended to assist operators in preparing and regularly reviewing their safety plans and to highlight key considerations based on the nature of their tours and activities. The Icelandic Tourist Board also uses the checklists as a reference when reviewing safety plans as part of its supervision
The checklists cover areas such as risk assessments, operating procedures, the education and training of guides and other staff, safety equipment, information provided to participants, emergency procedures, and other relevant aspects.
New and Improved Examples
Alongside the revision of the checklists, other material on the Icelandic Tourist Board’s website has also been reviewed and updated. This includes, among other things, an example of a completed risk assessment for a Golden Circle tour and an example of operating procedures for such a tour.
The aim of this material is to provide tourism operators with practical support in preparing safety plans and to encourage their use as living documents in day-to-day operations. Safety plans should reflect the operator’s activities, be reviewed regularly, and be familiar and readily accessible to guides and other staff.
The revised guidelines and checklists support the government’s focus on improving safety in tourism and the objective of strengthening safety culture and systematic preventive measures across the sector.
The Icelandic Tourist Board encourages tourism operators and others using the material to provide feedback on the guidelines and checklists. Questions regarding their use can also be sent to oryggi@ferdamalastofa.is.
